A Case Study of an Orthopedic Surgery using different Plates and Screws

Few years ago my niece faced a gruesome accident while she was driving back home in her two-wheeler. The very moment she was taken to the near by hospital. After detail examination it was found that there was limb dis-alignment and distal intra-articular tibial fractures in both legs.

First we were asked to bring an Esmarch rubber. Esmarch rubber is a 7cms wide and 2 meters long rubber strip. This rubber was wrapped around on the limb tightly from distal to proximal before starting the surgery. This rubber is used to prevent heavy blood circulation during the operation of the limb.

Then analyzing the complication of the impact of the accident, doctors were sure to use Adaptation plates, emergency screws, Malleolar screws and Condyler buttress plates.

Actually Adaptation plates http://www.orthopedic-implants.com/adaptation-plate.html are used in orthopedic surgery to stabilize or realign fractured or broken bones. It is manufactured by the finest grades of stainless steel and Titanium. But her accident had broken her limbs into pieces. So, the doctors decided to use Coverleaf plates instead of Adaptaion plates. Cloverleaf plates are used for distal intra-articular tibial fractures. These are made of stainless steel plates.

On the right leg she has comminuted distal fractures. So, instead of Adaptation plate, Condylar Buttress plate has to be placed there. Condylar Buttress plate is a flat shaped Coverleaf plate designed to buttress comminuted supra condylar fractures and comminuted distal fractures, coronal shear fractures etc. This plate was attached with Malleolar screws. Malleolar screws with cortex thread, shaft & trocar tip have limited use in the metaphyseal area, distal humerus, trochanteric area, & sometimes in the ankle, where the bone is rather dense.

Benefit from Some Excellent Innovations

Having spent more than a decade operating the patients of either bone diseases or victims of severe fractures; I have seen the pain and agony of the patients. At the same time I have experienced the dramatic results of several modern orthopedic implants. Today I thought that I talk about three surgical gadgets or implants as they are popularly called!

I will start with Emergency Screw-this amazing implant available in a thread diameter of 3.2 mm has relieved my patients from their soft tissue irritation problems post surgery. Though Emergency Screws look so small yet they serve very well!

Other miraculous surgical wrap is Esmarch rubber bandage. I have used this in a number of ways during my treatment. Though its major purpose was to exert pressure on the area of constant blood loss to stop bleeding but I have used the bandage to clear off the blood from the effected limb. This has helped me in visualizing the condition of the limb further. It can also be used as a first aid in case of heavy blood loss after any major calamity. As soon as the blood-flow stops, shift the person to the hospital for further treatment.

Cloverleaf plate is the last orthopedic implant of my today’s blog topic. This implant is an amazing instrument and has proved very effective while I was doing osteo synthesis of humeral head fractures. Though my fellow doctors and surgeons find it useful for intra-articular tibial fractures and pilon fractures along with ankle fractures.
